TRUSSVILLE, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Fourth of July celebrations kicked off all across central Alabama Thursday night.

There was over 8,000 people in attendance Thursday night at the Trussville Freedom Celebration. The celebration has become an annual tradition for Leslie Davis and her family, as they set up in their front yard to watch the fireworks.

“It’s always entertaining to have all the food trucks and you know just everything. So it’s always good,” Davis said.

For the 16th year, the celebration drew a crowd that filled The Mall in Trussville. The First Baptist Church Trussville hosted the event and kicked it off with a live band, there was also around 20 food trucks for people to check out.

“We love it. They do a really a really good job. We always sit across the street and it’s a really good view,” resident Amber Patterson said.

The family atmosphere is why Cleotis Woodall and his family like to attend.

“This is our second year coming out here and we enjoy it because it’s safe, it’s fun, and just meeting different people,” said Woodall.

Although it’s a lot of fun, it’s the significance of the day that’s the reason for the celebration.

“Just knowing our freedom doesn’t come free, and just having our independence just means the world. I know a lot of people don’t have that,” Patterson said.
