Restrooms to be built near Landrum City Hall, Masonic Lodge

LANDRUM—At the regularly scheduled Landrum City Council meeting held on Tuesday, August 13, the council discussed the construction of public restrooms in downtown Landrum. The restrooms would potentially be located across from Landrum City Hall behind the Landrum Masonic Lodge.

Mayor Bob Briggs announced that the council would discuss the issue further at next month’s meeting after hearing a response from the lodge, the current owners of the property. The Masonic Lodge requested drawings for the restrooms, which are being handled by Doug Hurlburt, who has executed a number of architectural drawings for Landrum in the past.

According to City Administrator Rich Caplan, the city would have to purchase the property from the lodge at a cost that has not yet been negotiated and that Hurlburt’s drawings should be available by next week. Caplan said that the city will move forward with building public restrooms in the city parking lot by Town Hall if the Masonic Lodge doesn’t approve of the proposal.

“We are one hundred percent getting public restrooms in downtown Landrum,” said Caplan on Thursday. “The project is advancing and we should know our next steps moving forward by next month’s city council meeting.”

A design fee, which includes architectural design, structural design, plumbing and mechanical and electrical engineering would cost $10,000. An overall cost of roughly $100,000 is estimated for the construction of the public restrooms.
