Tropical Storm Warning issued for eastern Polk

Tryon, Columbus, Saluda governments declare state of emergency

POLK COUNTY—A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued in eastern Polk County, including Saluda and Columbus, as Hurricane Helene approaches southwest Florida. A Tropical Storm Watch and Flood Watch are still in effect throughout western North Carolina and the Upstate.

Tryon, Columbus and Saluda officials declared a State of Emergency on Wednesday, following a state-issued declaration from Gov. Roy Cooper.

Tropical storm-force winds remain possible, with peak winds at 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. Heavy rain throughout Thursday and Friday is expected. An additional 6 to 10 inches of precipitation is possible, with higher amounts in some areas. Downed trees and power lines are also possible from Thursday night into Friday morning.

Extreme rainfall flooding may prompt numerous evacuations and rescues.

“Rivers and tributaries may overwhelmingly overflow their banks in many places with deep moving water,” the advisory states. “Small streams, creeks, and ditches may become raging rivers. In mountain areas, deadly runoff may rage down valleys while increasing susceptibility to rockslides and mudslides. Flood control systems and barriers may become stressed.”

The advisories also states that conditions are favorable for isolated tornadoes.

Residents should make preparations for potential flooding, wind damage and power outages, and use extra caution when driving. Never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
