As summer approaches and the weather warms, the risk of insect bites and stings on our pets increases. These can be painful and sometimes lead to serious allergic reactions. Knowing how to recognize and respond to any insect-related incidents can help keep your pet safe this summer.

Swelling at the site of a bite or sting is not uncommon. This can be mild to severe, depending on the location or your pet’s sensitivity. Pets may also show signs of pain or discomfort, such as whining, licking, or pawing at the affected area. The skin may be red and irritated, or may develop raised, itchy welts, which indicates an allergic reaction.

Facial swelling is also a common reaction to any stings or bites on the face or neck, and can lead to more serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, weakness or collapse, or vomiting or diarrhea. If you see any of these signs on your pet, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

It is also important to seek immediate veterinary care if your pet has suffered multiple stings, as they are at higher risk of allergic reaction.

Avoid areas with high insect activity, such as tall grass and flowering plants. And always use pet-safe insect repellents recommended by your veterinarian.
