As the summer heat rises, it’s essential to be vigilant about the dangers of heat exhaustion in pets. Recognizing the warning signs and taking preventive measures can help keep your furry friends safe during hot weather.

Pets love to play and exercise, but it’s important to prevent overexertion in hot weather. Limit their exercise during the hottest parts of the day and provide ample shade and water during playtime.

On extremely hot days, keep your pets indoors where it’s cool. If you don’t have air conditioning, use fans to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Consider offering your pet a cool bath or damp towels to help lower their body temperature.

Even on mildly warm days, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to dangerous levels within minutes. Leaving your pet in a car, even with the windows cracked, can lead to fatal heat stroke. Always take your pet with you or leave them at home in a cool, safe environment.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat exhaustion, take immediate action. Heavy panting is one of the earliest signs of overheating. Be on the lookout for excessive drooling, a sudden lack of energy, vomiting or diarrhea, bright red or pale gums, a rapid heartbeat, or dizziness. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cool, shaded area, offer small amounts of water, use cool (not cold) water to wet your pet’s body, and seek veterinary help immediately.
