Thirty-eight bills related to elections passed both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly in the first half of 2024. Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) vetoed 13 of these, the most vetoes of election-related legislation by any governor during the period. Despite the vetoes, the 25 new laws related to elections adopted this year are the most of any state with a divided government.

The Bridge That Was: University Removes 1970s Footbridge
The Ridley Footbridge over Emmet Street is gone. The bridge, built in the early 1970s as part of the construction of what is now the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development, was dismantled over the weekend. Facilities Management closed Emmet Street Thursday night to allow contractor S.B. Cox of Richmond to begin the demolition of the bridge, starting with breaking up the concrete pad on the bridge’s surface with jackhammers mounted on the articulated arms of excavators.

Former USPS employee in Richmond sentenced to 20 months in prison for mail theft
Richmond, Virginia – A Richmond man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for theft of mail while employed by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The announcement was made last week by Jessica D. Aber, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Jeff Krafels, Special Agent in Charge of the Mid Atlantic Area Field Office for the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
Artist, philanthropist P. Buckley Moss dies; legacy lives on through art, education
The art world is in mourning after learning today that P. Buckley Moss died on Saturday after a short illness. She was 91. Born on May 20, 1933, Patricia Moss discovered her passion for art at a young age. Moss was dyslexic. She discovered her artistic potential and enrolled in a high school for the fine arts, and later, graduated from New York’s Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.
