Tulsa Zoo shares ways they are keeping animals, visitors cool amid summer heat

TULSA, Okla. — The high temperatures are sticking around and it is not just people feeling the heat.

FOX23 went to the Tulsa Zoo to see how they’re keeping everyone protected in this heat.

The zoo said there are a few ways to keep both the animals and guests cool if you can't find shade or a cooler time of day.

"A lot of our animals are from regions where they are used to this heat. This is not a big deal for them,” said Beau Parks with the Tulsa Zoo.

Parks said animals like the flamingo can handle the high temperatures, but for the species that can't there are a few options.

"We give them shade misters and pools to swim in so they have the option to be out in the heat if they want or in the shade or indoor climate-controlled areas," Parks said.

FOX23 drove through the zoo to find many of those animals indoors or in the shade.

The zoo said it's watching out for all of its residents and treating many with ice treats and more food to make sure it doesn't spoil in the sun.

As for visitors, Parks said there are multiple indoor spaces with air conditioning like the conservation center, rainforest and lost kingdom building.

The zoo said there are cooling stations that you can find in various places around the zoo and a handful of ways to stay hydrated while you stroll.

"There are water fountains, water bottle filling stations and you can get cold drinks at any of the concession stands. You are also free to bring in coolers with your own cold drinks," Parks said.

Parks said they also have courtesy carts if you are in need of a lift back to the front entrance or your car.
