Tulsa Day Center in desperate need of donations

TULSA, Okla. — Staff at the Tulsa Day Center are frustrated and upset after not being able to provide shoes and clothing for those experiencing homelessness who turn to them for help.

Right now they said they are in desperate need of donations.

FOX23 learned the staff there is dedicated to helping and will even give people in need the clothes off their backs.

"One day, a woman came in here with no shoes or nothing on and it was raining. I gave her my shoes that one of my kids bought me off of my feet and gave them to her," said Constance Campbell, a staff member at the Tulsa Day Center.

Campbell said she did it because that woman needed the shoes more.

"It made me feel good because I blessed this person. It made me feel real good that I can help somebody that was in need," Campbell said.

At the Tulsa Day Center, donations go very quickly, especially men's clothes.

That's why they need donations right now.

One of the staff members there, Leon Pumphrey said this affects the homeless and homeless people who have jobs.

"A lot of our clients actually have things going on. I know people think, 'Well they're homeless,' but a lot of our homeless do have jobs or do have things that they're doing and they need things for that. What makes things harder for them is when they're not able to get those things, then the struggle of the day is harder and then it's usually a domino effect," Pumphrey said.

The director of development at the Tulsa Day Center, Monica Martin, said it's hard to see their donations go so fast.

"You know, we get excited. We fill the shelves with the T-shirts and the tennis shoes. We work with other companies like Runner's World. We'll go and pick up gently used tennis shoes, but if we're serving 300 to 350 people a day and we're going through 150 outfits a day? It goes pretty quick, unfortunately," Martin said.

Again, the big need is for men's clothing. If you'd like to donate to the Tulsa Day Center you can drop off clothes in person at its facility near Archer and Denver in downtown Tulsa.
