TUNNELTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — Looking for a new walking trail? Visit Tunnelton!

The Preston County Parks and Recreation Department opened a new trail in Tunnelton Linear Park on Saturday as part of the West Virginia Northern Rail Trail which will run from Tunnelton to Kingwood. The roughly 1-mile stretch that was unveiled today also includes activity stations along the sides like a fitness station, chess tables, bocce courts, cornhole and weather shelter.

The Parks and Recreation and Friends of the Cheat bought the land and is in the process of creating the 10-mile trail.

Executive Director of Preston County Parks and Recreation Rachelle Thorne said that the trail will be an asset to Tunnelton and part of their efforts to revitalize their community. “This is just another piece of recreational infrastructure that they’ll be able to utilize for all of the work that they are doing.”

The trail was made possible due to the COVID-19 stimulus grant that the Preston County Commission procured from the American Rescue Plan. Because of this, the trail was dedicated to those in the local community who were lost due to the pandemic.
