    NMHS allergists explain alpha-gal syndrome, a meat allergy caused by tick bites

    TUPELO — Sally Kate Collins believes it was while biking with her husband at Trace State Park that she contracted alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), an allergy to mammalian meat developed after a tick bite.

    But she wasn't bitten by only one tick. After the bike ride, she realized she'd been bitten by dozens of ticks — so many, and so tiny, that they looked like specks of dirt but couldn't be brushed off of her skin.
