Recent violence prompts Salvation Army to make changes at Mississippi campus

After recent incidents of violence, the Salvation Army has decided that it will close one of its Mississippi campuses and serve daily meals to-go on the weekends.

The Tupelo branch posted an announcement about the weekend changes on Facebook on Friday.

“Due to some violence and property destruction that happened last weekend, we have made the hard decision to close the gym on weekends,” the group posted on social media. “All meals will be to-go meals. Thank you to the volunteers who help with meals on the weekends. We apologize for any inconvenience. All other operations remain the same.”

According to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, the changes were prompted by violent incidents at the Tupelo campus. Those incidents included threats and attacks with a wrench and damage that was done to the organization’s air conditioners.

The organization’s leadership plans to meet to discuss the issues and determine whether the campus can reopen with changes or remain closed.

It is unknown when the campus will go back to normal weekend operations, but it will be a few weeks before the organization’s leadership decides to reopen or remain closed, Capt. Leeanna Marion said.
