Witcher Named Georgia’s 2024 State Teacher of the Year
(Cleveland)- White County teacher Holly Witcher has been named Georgia’s 2024 State Teacher of the Year. A Georgia Department of Education news release said that State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced the selection at a banquet held Friday night in LaGrange to celebrate all district teachers of the year.
Driver cited after Truck overturns outside Cornelia
The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit cited a driver after his vehicle left J Warren Road, traveled up the embankment, and overturned just before 7:30pm on Monday. The man, who was not hurt and whose name is not immediately available, was cited for driving too fast for conditions, no license on person, and a seatbelt violation. The Ford Ranger pickup truck lost its driver’s-side front wheel during the collision with the embankment. The wreck shut down J Warren Road between Level Grove Road and Old Cleveland Road for about an hour.
Cleveland, FES team up for Battle of the Books
A team of Crocodiles was crowned Fayetteville Reading Royalty when Cleveland Elementary won the inaugural Battle of the Books with Fayetteville Elementary. A collaboration between Cleveland Principal Jamie Inagawa and media specialist Kari Lee and FES Principal Dr. Monica Reckley and media specialist Sara Johnson, the Battle of the Books is designed to get students excited about reading and commit to completing novels with enjoyment and understanding.

The Georgia Department of Education announces the 2025 Georgia Teacher of the Year is Holly Witcher, a special education teacher at Tesnatee Gap Elementary School in White County! State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced the selection at a banquet held in LaGrange to celebrate all district teachers of the year. “Holly Witcher is a shining example of our mission of preparing all students for life,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “I am inspired by the way she equips her students to live positive, productive lives and helps them connect to their community. I know she will be a phenomenal advocate for public education over the next year, just as she has been for her students in White County. Westminster’s early start without the juice
Westminster electric power customers were lamenting the fact that their day started yesterday without lights. Here’s the explanation of what happened, as gathered by city administrator Kevin Bronson: “The rain (Sunday) this morning caused a tree limb to fall on an electric line. The line was close to the electric substation which caused the circuit breakers to trip. Power was lost to most of the city. Crews responded, found the issue and corrected it. Power was restored around 9:30 am.”
Rabun County, GA Sheriff Arrested on Multiple Charges
According to our sister station, SKY 96.3 in Clayton, GA, Rabun County Sheriff Chad Nichols, 45, has been arrested and charged with public indecency, sexual battery, and violation of oath by a public officer. The charges stem from an incident investigated by the GBI at the request of Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney George Christian. Nichols turned himself in on May 24, 2024, and was booked into the Rabun County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing, with the case file to be submitted to the District Attorney upon completion. The Rabun County Board of Commissioners is aware of the situation and will respond accordingly, with the GBI and Governor’s office also informed. According to records from the Rabun County, GA Detention Center, Nichols was released on $32,500 bond.
Sandlot Baseball, Softball Teams to Play Tonight
Toccoa Sandlot Baseball and Softball teams will both take to the diamond tonight in the Northeast Georgia Sectional Tournament that started this past Saturday in Lavonia. Both teams secured the District 7 title in games last week – the Baseball team with a 14 to 3 win over Franklin County, and the softball team with a 12 to 0 win over Rabun County.
From Blood Mountain in May to High Shoals in June
On May 16, the Big Canoe Hiking Club took 20 members to the Byron Reese Trailhead near Yellow Mountain for two different hikes. The weather cooperated and gave the hikers a beautiful, sun-filled day. The primary hike was to use the Byron Reese Trail to get to the Appalachian Trail that ascended to the top of Blood Mountain. This 4.6 mile, 1,597 feet of elevation change trail leads to the highest point on the AT in the state of Georgia. At 4,454 feet, the out-and-back path affords beautiful, expansive views of the state’s mountain ranges.
