Former Alabama football defensive star Christian Barmore is out indefinitely following a diagnosis of blood clots.

The New England Patriots announced the news about their defensive tackle and former second-round draft pick on Sunday, adding that Barmore was treated at Mass General Brigham over the weekend. Barmore celebrated his 25th birthday on Sunday and had signed a four-year extension with the Patriots earlier this year.

“Over the weekend, Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots. He was appropriately treated by the doctors at Mass General Brigham, who tested, evaluated and treated Christian," a news release from the Patriots read. "Our principal concern at this time is Christian’s health and well-being. Fortunately, Mass General Brigham provides some of the best healthcare in the world.

"While there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.”

Nicole Lynn, Barmore's agent, also released a statement on social media thanking the Patriots' trainer, Jim Whalen, for "his absolute diligence and care."

Barmore was drafted by the New England Patriots with the 38th overall pick in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft after playing at Alabama from 2018-20. In his two seasons with the Crimson Tide, Barmore totaled 63 tackles, including 10 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss.

He was a four-star defensive end and ranked as the No. 176th overall player and No. 16th defensive tackle coming out of Neumann Goretti High in Philadelphia. Barmore picked the Crimson Tide over offers from Florida, Georgia, Miami and South Carolina, among other significant offers.

The 2023 NFL season was a breakout for Barmore, as he recorded 65 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and 13 tackles for loss and appeared in all 17 games. Led by Barmore, the Patriots allowed just 4.7 yards a play and 21.5 points a game last season. His play earned him a four-year contract extension with a maximum value of $92 million, including $41.8 million in guaranteed money. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder from Philadelphia has 133 tackles, 12.5 sacks and nine pass deflections in 44 regular season games.

Will Christian Barmore return to the NFL?

As noted by ESPN's Mike Reiss , Patriots center David Andrews was diagnosed with blood clots, which caused him to miss the 2019 NFL season. He returned to play in 2020 and is entering his 10th NFL season in 2024. Barmore indicated on his social media a return to the NFL is on his radar.

"Thank you everyone for all the support, thoughts, and prayers. I'll be back soon," Barmore said in his story on Instagram .
