Will Alabama’s Dynasty Fade? The Nick Saban Era Ends in 2024

    By Shea Wallin,

Nick Saban's retirement has created a monumental void and a challenging legacy to follow at Alabama. Fans and analysts are questioning whether the Crimson Tide can maintain their dominance without Saban. However, his departure doesn’t necessarily spell the end of Alabama’s reign in 2024. The program is confident in its choice of former Washington Coach Kalen DeBoer, and all eyes will be on Tuscaloosa to see how the season unfolds.

In his 17 seasons at Alabama, Saban compiled a remarkable 201-29 record and secured six national championships. Many consider him the greatest college football coach of all time. Now, DeBoer faces the daunting task of keeping the Tide rolling. He acknowledges the immense pressure he will face this season, with Alabama’s standards set high for another national championship run.

Fortunately for the Tide, DeBoer is no stranger to success. Over his 26-year coaching career, he boasts a 104-12 record, including a 25-3 mark from his tenure with the Washington Huskies. He also won three NAIA national championships at Sioux Falls.

Alabama faced some challenges early in the 2023 season, culminating in a Rose Bowl loss to Michigan (27-20). For many teams, a playoff appearance and a Rose Bowl berth would be considered a success, but not for Alabama.

The Tide will benefit from returning talent, including quarterback Jalen Milroe and wide receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr. In 2023, Milroe threw for 23 touchdowns and 2,834 yards with a completion percentage of 65%.

They have also added potential impact transfers such as offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor from Southern Miss, safety King Mack from Penn State and defensive lineman

LT Overton. Additionally, DeBoer has secured top-tier prospects such as WR Ryan Williams and CB Mbakwe who may contribute on both sides of the ball.

As Alabama enters this new era without Saban, the future of the Crimson Tide is both promising and uncertain. Saban’s departure signals the end of a legendary chapter, but it also paves the way for a new leader to reshape the program’s identity. While Saban's legacy casts a long shadow, Alabama’s storied tradition, recruiting prowess, and institutional support provide a strong foundation for continued success.

Only time will tell if the Crimson Tide can uphold their elite status or if a new powerhouse will rise from the SEC. Regardless of the outcome, the 2024 season will undoubtedly be a defining year in Alabama football history.
