Five months after he was fired by Marvel Studios, X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo claims that he was stripped of his Season 2 credit after he posted X-Men -themed fan art in honor of Gay Pride Month.

“On June 13, #Marvel sent a letter notifying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post,” he shared in a statement on X, Instagram and Threads, alongside a photo of the illustration. “Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern l suffered through while on working on #XMen97 and [the long-delayed, Mahershala Ali-led] #Blade [movie]. I’ll have more to say soon but must take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out, proud, and nerdy.”

In response, Marvel issued the following statement to The Hollywood Reporter : “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”

DeMayo — who served as head writer on X-Men ‘97 during production on Seasons 1 and 2 — abruptly parted ways with the animated series just days before its March debut. At the time, DeMayo was expected to attend a premiere event ahead of the show’s launch. Instead, his work email was deactivated, staff was informed that he was no longer involved with the series, and his Instagram account appeared to have been deleted.

According to the latest report by THR , DeMayo’s termination followed an investigation into sexual misconduct. Deadline , meanwhile, notes that the credit removal on Season 2 was due to “breaches of the two sides’ separation agreement.”

X-Men ’97 is Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Animated Program, alongside Bob’s Burgers , The Simpsons , Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai and HBO’s Scavengers Reign . DeMayo shared on socials earlier this week that he has yet to be invited to the Sept. 15 ceremony.

Matthew Chauncey — who previously worked on the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel and What If…? will replace DeMayo as head writer on X-Men ’97’ s in-development third season.

TVLine has reached out Marvel and DeMayo’s rep for comment.
