My Lady Jane has been thrown off the throne — for good.

Prime Video has cancelled the comedic fantasy drama, which reimagined the life of short-lived Queen of England Lady Jane Grey, TVLine has confirmed. The show’s first and only season debuted on the streamer June 27 and was well-received, but failed to rank on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming charts.

Named one of TVLine’s most underrated shows of 2024 , My Lady Jane starred Emily Bader ( Charmed ) as the titular “young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded, back in good ol’ 1553,” reads the official synopsis. The series, however, told “history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy.”

In a genre-bending twist, it was revealed in the premiere — spoiler alert? — that this world also contains people known as Ethians who can turn into animals. After she is forced into an arranged marriage, Jane discovers that her husband Lord Guildford Dudley ( Killing Eve’ s Edward Bluemel) is the man she had a hate-flirt session with in a bar — and he shapeshifts against his will into a horse during the day! The finale reunited the lovers, with Jane riding off on her husband, but hinted at more political turmoil in the Court of England, where Princess Mary (Kate O’Flynn) had successfully schemed the throne away from Jane and almost had her beheaded.

The cast also included Jordan Peters as Jane’s cousin, King Edward VI; Anna Chancellor as Jane’s mother, Lady Frances Grey; Dominic Cooper as Mary’s lover/ally Lord Seymour; Rob Brydon as Guildford’s father, Lord Dudley; Abbie Hern as Princess Bess; Isabella Brownson and Robyn Betteridge as Jane’s sisters, Katherine and Margaret; Henry Ashton as Guildford’s brother, Lord Stan Dudley; Máiréad Tyers as Jane’s Ethian friend, Susannah; Michael Workeye as Ethian pack leader Archer; Joe Klocek as Ethian thief Fitz; Brandon Grace as William Seymour; and Will Keen as the Duke of Norfolk. Jim Broadbent also guest-starred as the Duke of Leicester.

Meredith Glynn ( The Boys, Supernatural ) and creator Gemma Burgess served as showrunners.

Our sister site Deadline first reported the cancellation.
