Friday the 13th Prequel Series Crystal Lake Comes Back From the Dead With New Showrunner

It seems nothing can stop Jason Voorhees from killing again: Peacock’s Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake is back on track thanks to the addition of new showrunner Brad Caleb Kane ( It: Welcome to Derry ), TVLine has confirmed.

“From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guy’s eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask,” Kane said in a statement. “Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothing’s defined the genre more than Friday The 13th . I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24.”

Kane will also serve as the series’ creator, writer and executive producer, assuming the gig from outgoing showrunner Bryan Fuller who confirmed his departure in May. “For reasons beyond our control, [production company] A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” Fuller said at the time.

Plot details for the project still remain under wraps.

The show was ordered to series back in October 2022, being billed as an “expanded prequel” to the long-running horror film franchise with hockey mask-wearing killer Jason Voorhees at its center.

The original Friday the 13th film, with counselors being murdered at a summer camp, was released in 1980 and become a box-office hit, spawning a franchise that includes nine sequels, a Nightmare on Elm Street crossover Freddy vs. Jason and a 2009 big-screen reboot. A previous TV adaptation, Friday the 13th: The Series , ran in first-run syndication from 1987 to 1990. The CW also developed an hour-long series based on the franchise, but it never made it past the pilot stage.
