Harry Potter’s Bonnie Wright Hopes HBO Series Gives Harry/Ginny’s Story More Time Than the Films Did

A Harry Potter films alum is hoping HBO sprinkles a little amortentia over the franchise’s upcoming series adaptation.

Bonnie Wright, who played Ginny Weasley in the movies based on J.K. Rowling’s books, recently told our sister site Variety that she’d like to see “more of the development of the relationship between Ginny and Harry” in the forthcoming series.

Decades-old Spoiler Alert!: As those who’ve read the books and/or seen the movies know, Ginny and Harry meet after Harry befriends her brother, Ron. Over the course of the story, they become friends and eventually fall in love — though the relationship develops in greater detail in the seven novels than it does in the eight Harry Potter films.

“There’s nuanced moments of where they begin to fall in love,” Wright continued, discussing what she hopes makes it into the new version of the tale. “I think more of that arc of her character becoming this real loyal sidekick to Harry and how she really understands and knows his story and who he is, and is the best partner for him.”

She added that, while she is taking part in Food Network’s Wizards of Baking competition, hosted by her on-screen brothers James and Oliver Phelps (who played Fred and George Weasley), she will not appear in HBO’s as-yet-untitled Potter series.

“I’m happily just going to be watching,” she said.

Harry Potter TV Series: Everything We Know So Far About HBO’s Adaptation View List

First announced in April 2023 and described as “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling,” the HBO series will tap a brand-new cast to lead a new generation of fandom and be “full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”

Francesca Gardiner , whose writing and producing credits include His Dark Materials and Succession , has been set to write and showrun the small-screen adaptation, while Mark Mylod ( Succession , Game of Thrones , Entourage ) will direct multiple episodes. The series is expected to premiere in 2026.
