Chappell Roan continued her journey to superstardom on Wednesday, making a memorable pitstop at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Roan, whose album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is riding a massive wave of commercial and critical success, took the VMAs stage for the very first time, introduced by none other than RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby, who referred to her as “your favorite drag queen’s favorite artist.”

Suited in armor and surrounded by a flaming castle set, Roan had the crowd screaming before singing a single note of “Good Luck, Babe!” That screaming continued as Roan continued to serve Joan of Arc realness and… sword-ography? Is that a word? Well, we’re making it one!

Watch Roan’s full VMAs performance below:

Later in the night, Roan accepted the Moon Person for Best New Artist, dedicating her victory to her LGBTQ+ fanbase. “For all the queer kids in the midwest watching right now, I see you, I understand you, because I’m one of you, and don’t ever let anyone tell that you can’t be exactly who you wanna be, bitch.”

This was Roan’s biggest TV performance to date, following her viral appearances on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon .
