Agatha All Along EP Explains That ‘Loaded,’ ‘Powerful’ Agatha/Rio Moment in Episode 4 — Watch

There’s long been something brewing between Agatha All Along ‘s dynamic Agatha-Rio duo. This week, it officially spilled over the cauldron.

Episode 4 of the Disney+ series, which released Wednesday night, gave viewers a small but significant bit of clarity about Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and Rio’s (Aubrey Plaza) charged history — and addressed a pivotal question about Agatha’s relationship to Joe Locke’s Teen.

After Agatha’s coven successfully survived its second trial on the Witches’ Road — this one was musical! — the witches returned to the forested road, where Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) saved Teen from a very concerning injury. (Agatha, notably, appeared most worried about the boy’s survival.) Afterward, Rio opened up a little to the women, albeit cryptically, about someone in Rio’s life that is now her “scar” after past events damaged their relationship. In the next scene, that scar was all but confirmed to be Agatha as the two witches stepped away for a private conversation that nearly resulted in a kiss between them.

At the last second, though, Rio backed away from the kiss, and instead dropped a whopper on Agatha regarding Teen: “That boy isn’t yours.”

Of course, we don’t know if Rio is telling the truth here, or why she’s chosen to tell Agatha such a thing. We know that Agatha allegedly traded her son for the Darkhold way back when, and we know that the sigil spell cast on Teen has rendered his backstory a mystery for now. (Though fan theories abound!) And, as head writer Jac Schaeffer admits to TVLine in the video above, “It’s not meant to be entirely clear” why Rio would divulge such heavy information (or misinformation) to Agatha right now.

“That moment, which is so loaded and so powerful — our intention for that moment is really about Rio’s relationship with Agatha,” Schaeffer tells us. “They’re on the precipice of reconnecting, but this idea of ‘the boy’ is something that comes between them.”

Series star Hahn, meanwhile, is optimistic that Agatha will fill in some blanks about Agatha and Rio’s history as the season progresses. “I think a lot is going to be revealed in the latter half of the show,” she hints. ( With reporting by Matt Webb Mitovich )
