Forgive us, Agatha All Along ‘s Teen. We didn’t realize we were among Marvel royalty.
During its fifth episode on Wednesday, the WandaVision spinoff reminded us, in no uncertain terms, that it is very much a WandaVision spinoff, with a last-second reveal of Teen’s (Joe Locke) real identity: He’s Wiccan, the son of Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.
First, let’s back up: Much of Wednesday’s installment centered around Agatha’s specific trial on the Witches’ Road, which forced her to confront the demons of her past — quite literally — via a slumber party Ouija board session. During the ordeal, Agatha nearly fell victim to the vengeful ghost of her mother… but when Alice (Ali Ahn) tried to use her own power to free Agatha from her mom’s clutches, Agatha then used her own power to steal Alice’s, draining Alice of not only her witchy abilities, but her life. (We’ll miss you, Alice!)
Upon returning to the Road after the trial, an angry Teen confronted Agatha about her choice to kill Alice, insisting that Agatha only cares about accumulating other witches’ power. “So that’s what it means to be a witch?” Teen asked her. “Killing people to serve your own agenda? No. Not for me.”
With a sly smile, Agatha whispered to him, “Are you sure?” followed by a big clue about the reveal to come: “You’re so much like your mother ,” she said.
But just when Agatha beckoned Teen to continue following her down the Road, something very different happened. Blue light began to flicker from Teen’s hands, and he possessed Lilia and Jennifer to grab Agatha and toss her in the mud, which immediately consumed her. Then, he brought Lilia and Jennifer to the same fate, tossing them in mud that swallowed them up.
And once the coven was gone, we cut back to Teen one last time — only now, he was wearing a crown that looked very much like the headpiece the Scarlet Witch herself wears:
Roll credits!
We suppose we’re doing some inferring here as to Teen’s actual name, as no one called him Wiccan before the episode ended. But Marvel lore supports the idea: In the comics, Wiccan’s real name is Billy Kaplan, and he’s a reincarnated version of Billy Maximoff, one of Wanda Maximoff’s sons that she was forced to give up. (Her other son, Tommy Maximoff, is reincarnated as Tommy Shepherd aka Speed.) Plus, it’s a key storyline for the comics’ version of Wiccan that he goes in pursuit of his real mother and learns to hone his magical abilities, as Teen has been doing thus far. The blue light coming from Teen’s hands matches Wiccan’s blue power in the comics, too.
Teen’s real identity has been a mystery since Agatha All Along began, as he’s been protected by a sigil that keeps others from finding out his name or backstory. Many Agatha fans have theorized that Teen could indeed be Wiccan, and Episode 5’s reveal of course begs the question: Will we see the supposedly deceased Wanda again before Agatha is over?
