We knew Ted Lasso ‘s Brett Goldstein would be guest-starring in Season 2 of Shrinking , but we never could’ve guessed who he’d wind up playing.
In the Apple TV+ comedy’s season premiere (the first two episodes are now available to stream), Goldstein plays Louis, the drunk driver responsible for Tia’s death. Louis shows up at Jimmy’s work hoping to apologize, but Jimmy blows a gasket before they can really talk, ordering the man to “get the f–k out of here!” Even the tiniest of interactions leaves Jimmy mentally and emotionally wounded.
According to co-creator, writer and executive producer Bill Lawrence, casting Goldstein for the role was an idea that Jason Segel “really championed.”
“[Brett’s] a sweet, sweet man and totally sympathetic and empathetic,” Lawrence tells TVLine in the video embedded above. “If we had cast somebody that doesn’t make you feel that way immediately, the show probably wouldn’t have worked this year. He just absolutely crushed it.”
“I think this season is about a journey of forgiveness,” adds Segel. “It’s really easy to make the object of your scorn into some sort of devil, and to slowly realize that that’s not how life works is going to be part of the journey of their dynamic.”
Goldstein’s presence in the premiere is minimal, so you’ll have to stay tuned to see what happens next between Jimmy, Alice and the man who upended their lives. As both Lawrence and Segel tease, all three characters are steering toward an emotional journey that may or may not end with absolution or reconciliation.
“I don’t think there’s any moving forward for people that go through this type of catastrophic family event,” says Lawrence. “Some people never do, but until you forgive, you’re gonna be stuck in it forever.”
