Sixteen million pounds of peanuts slow-roasted in Abilene warehouse fire
ABILENE, Texas — Sixteen million pounds of peanuts were slow-roasted in a warehouse fire on Abilene's north side Thursday as the building smoldered and smoked all day long. More than 50 firefighters required several hours to control the fire, fed by rows of bagged and boxed peanuts that filled the sprawling plant from wall to wall and floor to ceiling, according to the Abilene Fire Department. At the scene, spent men sat leaning against their trucks and the building, replenishing themselves with sandwiches, chicken legs, ice, cool towels, and Gatorade, all courtesy of the Red Cross and local businesses.
An inmate’s body temp was 107.5 when he died. The state of Texas says heat did not kill him.
