Earwig workshops planned for Pacific Northwest apple and pear growers
Apple and pear growers might, especially those looking to boost natural-enemy populations for biological control of aphids and pear psylla in their orchards. Washington State University researchers want to build on their findings that earwig releases can be beneficial and are hosting a series of workshops to show growers how easy it is to trap the insects in hot spots where they are not wanted — say, an organic peach orchard — and release them in pear and apple blocks.
Jackpine Fire near La Pine grows 180 acres; Highway 97 back open
A wildfire that started southwest of La Pine Friday grew to 180 acres Saturday morning and was 0% contained. Highway 97 south of La Pine was back open. The Jackpine Fire is burning in the area south of Masten Road, east of Deer Forest Drive and West of Jackpine Loop. It was first reported before 3:00 p.m. Friday.

After fatal drug overdose, Oregon State Hospital resumes limited in-person visits for patients
Oregon State Hospital will resume in-person visits for some patients on Monday after suspending them in May after a patient died of a suspected fentanyl overdose. Officials at the state-run psychiatric facility suspended in-person visits between patients and their family and friends so the hospital could retool its visiting policies, with an eye toward preventing visitors from passing drugs or other contraband on to patients. The hospital has nearly 700 patients between its main campus in Salem and a smaller satellite campus in Junction City.

St. Helens’ Safeway location was included on a list of 579 stores across the nation and 62 across Oregon proposed for sale as part of a planned merger between parent company Albertsons Company and Kroger.
