TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – East Texas is known to have hot dry summers, which can be bad for plants. Elizabeth Hoover with Hughes Plant Farm said not to worry because there are some beautiful flowers that can tolerate higher temperatures.

East Texans can expect sweeter watermelons this season

“This is a type of vinca called Catharanthus kawaii, and it does really well, all the vincas do, they love the heat and they love the dry as well,” Hoover said.

She added that if you have areas in your yard that stay shaded you have options as well.

“Hydrangeas, ferns, begonias, even like New Guinea impatiens, all those are really great for shady locations,” Hoover said.

But if all you have is a space with direct sunlight all day, the way you plant the flower will determine how to care for it.

“If you planted in the ground, your water needs are going to be less than if you’re planted in a pot, a pot can dry out faster,” Hoover said.

Mulch can also help keep your plants alive this summer, according to Hoover.

“It’s going to retain moisture and keep your weeds down, so it’s definitely a great idea,” Hoover said.

Hughes Plant Farm said crape myrtles are also a great plant for East Texas during the summer since they’ll brighten up your lawn and are easy to care for.
