Tyler Fire go door-to-door checking residents’ smoke alarms

UPDATE: On Friday, the Tyler Fire Department and the South Tyler Rotary Club went around the northern part of the city installing smoke alarms and replacing batteries.

“We’ll be doing it again next Friday, July 19, and again on Friday, July 26,” the department said.

TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – The Tyler Fire Department will soon go door-to-door near Caldwell Zoo to help residents either install or check smoke alarms.

According to the City of Tyler, on July 12, July 19 and July 26 firefighters and the American Red Cross will concentrate on houses in North Tyler near Woldert Park and Caldwell Zoo to look over residents smoke alarms.

They are focusing in that area of the city after a recent fire occurred at a house with no smoke alarms.

Tyler FD said they will also replace batteries and install free smoke alarms in homes that need them since the risk of death in a structure fire is approximately 50% lower with working alarms.

Residents are encouraged to test their smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and confirm three beeps are heard.

“Don’t hear the beeps? Then it’s time to change the batteries if your model requires them. If your smoke alarm is 10 years old, it’s time to get a new alarm because the sensor becomes less sensitive over time,” the City of Tyler said.
