In the dark? What you should know before buying a generator

TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – Homeowners across East Texas are debating whether a generator purchase is the best investment for them after recent storms.

Mister Sparky of Tyler, an electrical company, said it is a good idea to buy a generator before severe weather season.

Though some generators can run upwards of $17,000, experts say they are a worthwhile investment. The size of the generator needed depends on the wants of the homeowner.

Stand alone generators can power an entire house but it is important people do their research to make sure their home gets the correct kilowatts of power.

“A 1,500 to 2,000 square foot house, you’re going to probably want somewhere around a 22 kW generator. Anything over that you’re going to want 26 kW, it may fall down to a 24 kW,” Mister Sparky owner Randall Gardner said.

There are a few things homeowners have to check off their list before installation can occur.

“We have to be at least five feet away from any windows because carbon dioxide from the generators and stuff, that’s by code. Natural gas, we had to have fuel to run the generators. That has to be available,” Gardner said.

Gardener said a portable generator can be installed to power appliances, such as a refrigerator or ceiling fans.

When searching for a reliable company, experts said make sure the company has referrals and they have installations under their belt.

Gardner said some realtors believe the generator is part of the house, however they can be physically relocated if a homeowner chooses to move.
