TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – As summer continues, East Texans can expect high temperatures and it is more important than ever to be aware of how the heat can affect your body.

Families at P.T. Cole park in Tyler are beating the heat with the help of splash pads.

“The Splash pad is really fun because when it’s really hot outside you can come cool off,” park visitor Alex Valensuela said. “And enjoy time with family and friends”

Alongside climbing temperatures, this summer can come with heat related illness like heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat strokes.

UT Health East Texas EMT’s said they are already seeing an increase in calls this summer.

“We’ve had 44 calls just this month,” Vicky LaMay, paramedic and education coordinator for UT Health EMS, said.

According to the CDC heat related illnesses are preventable and people should learn the warning signs such as, high body temperature, dizziness, nausea, confusion and even loss of consciousness.

One way experts recommend preventing getting sick is to stay hydrated.

“Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water,” LaMay said. “Drink water, you can combine water with a sports drink but it’s better to drink water than a sports drink to stay hydrated.”
