TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – In 1954, Bud Morriss returned to Tyler from World War II with the desire to start his own butcher shop.

“It’s always been a very special place to come,” Country Meat Market supervisor Tom Koehler said.

70 years later, the Country Meat Market in Tyler is still slicing up meat for customers.

“Humbled and grateful that God has given us a platform to be a positive light in any community, especially our hometown,” Country Meat Market owner Steve Morriss said.

Seven decades have passed and Steve Morriss has taken over for his late father Bud. Even though time and a generation has passed, employees still do everything the same as they did back in the day.

“Everything we do is considered old-fashioned and original… so many things have changed in today’s world, we want to remain 1954,” Morriss said.

They are the source of their own meat, they prepare everything in front of the customers and still walk people’s groceries to their car.

“We want to take that time to know our customers, hear what their life is about,” Morriss said.

Tom Koehler has known the Morriss family for years and worked with them as a supervisor for the last nine. He gives credit to how they treat customers to a saying Bud told him, “we serve people, we just happen to sell meat.”

“It makes it where we want to make a difference in people’s lives, not just through having great quality products, but to have them leave here happier or changed in a positive way,” Koehler said.

The business will continue with Steve’s grandson, a 5th generation butcher, to make sure everyone that walks through the doors is treated like family.
