TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – A Tyler man charged with the murder of his father is due back in court this September.

Christopher Tilley, 44 of Tyler, was indicted for murdering his father, 79-year-old Dell Tilley, in June.

He is accused of fatally shooting his father after an argument about who would take care of an injured dog in their home. Christopher told officers that his father began to choke him, and he shot him once in self-defense.

A criminalist determined that the scene did not show any signs of disturbance, according to his probable cause affidavit, and that Dell had suffered two gunshot wounds that were fired from close contact into his abdomen, and an additional gunshot wound to his neck/head that occurred near ground level.

After waiving his arraignment, Christopher will be back in court Aug. 1 for a plea docket agreement. He has a jury trial scheduled for Sept. 9.
