PHOENIX— Governor Katie Hobbs today announced the proclamation of August 25–31, 2024, as John McCain Democracy Week, honoring the late Senator on the sixth anniversary of his death and what would have been his 88th birthday on August 29, 2024.

The proclamation recognizes McCain’s extensive contributions to both military and public service. “Senator John Sidney McCain III was born on August 29, 1936, into a family with a strong tradition of military service. The son and grandson of four-star admirals, he was called to duty from birth,” the proclamation states.

McCain’s military career is highlighted by his service as a naval aviator, where he displayed significant resilience. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1958, McCain trained as a naval aviator and flew attack aircraft from carriers, according to the proclamation.

The proclamation continues, “During a mission in North Vietnam in 1967, his aircraft was downed, and he was held as a prisoner of war (POW) for five years. During his captivity, McCain chose to remain in prison until all of his fellow prisoners were released.”

Reflecting on this period, McCain is quoted: “It wasn’t until I had lost America for a time that I realized how much I loved her.”

The proclamation also acknowledges McCain’s impact on both national and international stages as he transitioned from military to political service.

“Senator McCain began his political career by running for Congress in Arizona, leading to a four-decade-long career focused on human rights, democracy, and public service,” the proclamation emphasizes.

McCain’s dedication to democracy is further highlighted.

“From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the protests of Maidan Square, McCain supported efforts by people around the world to seek greater freedom,” the proclamation states.

The McCain Institute, an organization dedicated to upholding and advancing the values that John McCain championed throughout his life, praised the proclamation.

The institute, founded in 2012 as a part of Arizona State University, focuses on issues central to McCain’s legacy, including the promotion of democracy, said McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas.

“As the organization dedicated to advancing the values and legacy of the McCain family, we are thrilled by Governor Hobbs’ proclamation recognizing John McCain Democracy Week,” said Farkas.

“We hope that John McCain Democracy Week inspires Arizonans and all Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves, just as Senator McCain did, and to continue fighting for democracy at a time when it is more vulnerable than ever.”
