Weekend Travel Advisory: Northbound I-17 Closed at Jomax Road for Pavement Improvements

PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) today announced a full closure of northbound Interstate 17 at Jomax Road in north Phoenix, beginning Friday, Sept. 6, at 10 p.m. and lasting until Monday, Sept. 9, at 5 a.m.

This closure, according to ADOT, is part of ongoing pavement improvement work aimed at creating a smoother and more durable roadway.

Traffic will be detoured using the northbound I-17 off- and on-ramps at Jomax Road. In addition, northbound lanes will be restricted to one lane between Jomax Road and Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive.

ADOT urges drivers to allow extra travel time, avoid peak hours, and stay on the designated detour route, as local streets are not designed to handle heavy traffic volumes during freeway closures.

To prevent detouring vehicles from using local roads and reduce congestion for area residents, ADOT will enforce local-traffic-only closures at neighborhood entrances and deploy law enforcement officers at intersections to assist with traffic management.

According to ADOT, lengthy traffic backups are unavoidable during freeway closures like this, so drivers should plan ahead.

Future Restrictions

In addition to this pavement improvement project between Happy Valley Road and SR 74, another major project is currently underway north of Anthem Way.

Southbound I-17 closure at Loop 303 from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16. Traffic will detour via the Loop 303 off- and on-ramps.

Northbound I-17 lane reduction to one lane between Loop 303 and State Route 74/Carefree Highway from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23.
