PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced today that the southbound lanes of Interstate 17 will be closed at Loop 303 from 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, as part of ongoing pavement improvement efforts.

According to ADOT, it aims to create a smoother and more durable road surface on a number of Phoenix-area freeways, including Interstate-10, I-17, Loop 101 and Loop 202.

During this closure, traffic will be detoured via the Loop 303 off- and on-ramps, merging back into a single lane until reaching Jomax Road.

ADOT advises drivers to allow extra time, avoid peak travel hours, and follow the designated detour routes to minimize delays.

Local streets, not equipped for high traffic volumes, will have local-traffic-only closures to keep detouring vehicles off neighborhood roads, with law enforcement on hand to assist with traffic flow, according to ADOT

In addition to the I-17 closure, the Loop 303/Sonoran Desert Drive underpass will be closed to facilitate traffic management.

Eastbound Loop 303 drivers will need to head south on I-17 to Happy Valley Road to connect with northbound I-17.

The six-mile stretch of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and State Route 74 is undergoing extensive resurfacing work, aimed at improving road conditions.

ADOT has also scheduled additional weekend closures for the northbound lanes of I-17 between Loop 303 and SR 74/Carefree Highway

These closures will occur from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, and again from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, according to ADOT
