PHOENIX — Northbound Interstate 17 will be narrowed to one lane between Loop 303 and State Route 74 in north Phoenix from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, for ongoing pavement improvement, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

Drivers will also face closures at the I-17 off- and on-ramps at Dove Valley Road.

Those needing to access Dove Valley Road should exit at Loop 303 and continue north on the frontage road. Additionally, the circular ramp connecting northbound I-17 to westbound SR 74 will be closed during nighttime hours.

ADOT encourages motorists to plan ahead, allow extra time, and travel during early morning or nighttime hours to avoid delays. Local streets east of I-17 are not designed to handle increased freeway traffic and should be avoided as alternate routes.

ADOT has scheduled future weekend lane restrictions as part of this improvement project.

Northbound I-17 will be narrowed to one lane again between Loop 303 and SR 74 from Sept. 27 to Sept. 30. Southbound I-17 is scheduled to close at Loop 303 from Oct. 4-7 and again from Oct. 11-14, with detours provided.

The project covers a six-mile section of I-17 between Happy Valley Road and SR 74. Crews are removing the old asphalt and smoothing the concrete underneath using a process called diamond grinding.

According to ADOT, this method creates a smoother and more durable road surface and has been used successfully on other Phoenix-area freeways like I-10 and Loop 101.
