Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader and one of its most polarizing figures, died today, at the age of 83. Known as “Charlie Hustle,” Rose leaves behind a complicated but storied legacy in the world of baseball.

Stephanie Wheatley, a spokesperson for Clark County in Nevada, confirmed on behalf of the medical examiner that Rose died on Monday. Wheatley said his cause and manner of death had not yet been determined.

Rose debuted in 1963 with his hometown Cincinnati Reds, where he spent most of his 24-season career. He was known for his aggressive play, relentless determination, and unrivaled work ethic.

Over the years, Rose amassed a remarkable list of achievements, according to Baseball-Reference.

    • All-time MLB hits leader with 4,256 career hits.
    • 17-time All-Star across five different positions, a unique achievement.
    • Three-time World Series champion (1975, 1976 with the Cincinnati Reds; 1980 with the Philadelphia Phillies).
    • 1973 National League MVP for his regular-season performance.
    • Two-time Gold Glove Award winner (1969, 1970).
    • Most games played in MLB history with 3,562.
    • Most plate appearances with 15,890

Rose’s career, however, is also remembered for the controversy surrounding his lifetime ban from baseball in 1989.

After allegations surfaced that he had gambled on games while playing for and managing the Reds, Rose was barred from the sport—a decision that still defines his legacy.

Despite multiple appeals for reinstatement, the ban has remained in place.

Rose’s connection to Cincinnati remains unbreakable. His No. 14 jersey was retired, and he was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame.

Editor’s Note: While Rose’s off-field actions have clouded his post-career reputation, his on-field accomplishments continue to resonate, cementing his status as one of baseball’s most significant figures.
