PHOENIX – The U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Arizona, announced today that Jared Josh John, 32, of Chinle, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison on September 11, 2024.

John was convicted on multiple charges, including Kidnapping, Carjacking, Robbery, and Assault with Intent to Commit Murder.

In addition to his prison sentence, United States District Judge Diane J. Humetewa imposed five years of supervised release to follow his incarceration.

Chinle is a small town in the northeastern part of Arizona, located within the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American reservation in the United States.

Chinle serves as a gateway to the Canyon de Chelly National Monument, a place of deep cultural and historical significance for Indigenous peoples. The town plays a key role in Navajo Nation tourism and is vital in preserving Navajo culture and traditions.

In July 2020, John and a co-defendant violently attacked a male victim who was resting in his car while passing through the Navajo Nation.

According to court documents, John and his accomplice abducted the victim and drove him deep into the desert. Once there, John slit the victim’s throat three times and left him for dead.

The victim survived by playing dead and using his clothes to fashion a makeshift tourniquet, eventually finding help and receiving life-saving medical attention, according to court documents.

John’s co-defendant, Everickk Matthew Begay, 55, also of Chinle, pleaded guilty to related charges, including Kidnapping and Robbery, in March 2023.

Begay was sentenced to 97 months in prison in August 2023 and will also serve a term of supervised release following his incarceration.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Division of Public Safety. .
