USAFA cadets still need sponsor families

(U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.) — Every year, hundreds of U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) cadets arrive to begin their journey to becoming officers with the Air Force or Space Force. For most, home is hundred if not thousands of miles away, and the sponsor program offers local families and cadets a way to connect and build a home away from home.

The USAFA Cadet Sponsor Program offers cadets a way to gather support beyond the formal Academy environment, and a place to relax and unwind. The program also offers local families an opportunity to become an extended family to future military leaders.

According to a press release from USAFA, almost 400 incoming cadets still need a sponsor family. While many sponsors are associated with the military, the local community is welcome to apply. Those unsure if they are ready for a long-term commitment can apply to be a sponsor family for a day during the Class of 2028’s Day Out, a single day event allowing basic cadets to leave the Academy for the first time since beginning Basic Cadet Training, July 27.

USAFA said the Cadet Sponsor Office strives to match sponsors with cadets who share the same interests and ideologies. “By name” requests can be submitted by cadets and sponsors. Once a cadet is assigned to a family, they will remain so until the cadet’s graduation year or until either party requests a reassignment.
