USAFA plans restoration of cadet dorm totaling $597M

(U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.) — The U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) is planning to renovate a six-story dorm that could cost close to $600 Million.

A spokesperson with USAFA told FOX21 that Sinjan Hall, constructed in 1968, could cost $597 million to renovate. According to USAFA, the planned restoration is a five-phase project that would replace and upgrade key building systems like heating, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, window walls, bathrooms, cadet rooms, and cadet workspaces.

Sinjan Hall is one of two dormitories at USAFA. The six-story, 625,000 square feet hall with 891 cadet dorm rooms has never undergone restoration.

The other cadet dorm built in 1958, Vandenberg Hall underwent restoration from 2007 to 2014. The renovation cost close to $239 million and included replacing glass curtain walls, repairing cadet rooms, cadet bathrooms, squadron assembly rooms, and repairs to mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The renovation also replaced and installed IT infrastructure, and upgraded utilities and fire protection systems.

USAFA told FOX21 that at the moment, the Air Force listed the project as an “unfunded priority.”

“This fiscal year, the Air Force applied limited facility funding to projects supporting higher priority mission requirements,” said USAFA. “The Air Force lists our dormitory project, along with many others from across the force, in this year’s and next year’s facilities program as an unfunded priority.”

When asked about how the Academy would fund the project, USAFA told FOX21 that they believed the best option to fund the improvements was through the Air Force’s Facilities, Sustainment, Restoration and Modernization (FSRM) program.
