A man was booked into Uintah County Jail last week on a felony charge of Aggravated Assault. A woman requested that an officer go with her to pick up items from a residence in Uintah County and after she retrieved the items she told the officer that an altercation had taken place before her call in which her head had been shoved into the wall and her throat had been grabbed resulting in restricted breathing. The officer flagged down 24-year-old Brennon Blair Greenhow who was about to leave. When the officer asked Greenhow about the alleged altercation he stated that they had been in an argument that got physical and he pushed her into the wall. He said he wasn’t sure what happened next because when he gets mad he blacks out. Marks on the victims neck were consistent with the account shared. Greenhow was arrested and is charged with 3rd degree felony Aggravated Assault.

Uintah County Emergency Management is spreading the word that the official Heat Advisory issued includes the eastern Uinta Basin, primarily Uintah County, during which temperatures are expected to be at or above 100 degrees. The Heat Advisory is in effect from 10am on Friday to 9pm on Saturday and precautionary actions are encouraged. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, OSHA recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.”

Summer may be moving along too fast but at least there are the county fairs to look forward to before the season ends. As that approaches, organizers of the Uintah County Fair are asking residents to submit names of local heroes to be honored during the fair. Submit a photo and tell us why they are your hero. These will be put on display on the hero wall during the fair. The theme for the 2024 Uintah County Fair is ‘Find Your Hero’ and it will run August 14th through the 17th. The developing “Flag Crag” rock climbing area across from Remember the Maine Park continues to progress. The Dinoland Adventure Project (DAP) team kicked off the project with a route development training with the Salt Lake Climbers Alliance at the end of May. Four sport climbing routes have been bolted so far, ranging in level of difficulty from 5.8 to 5.10+, with names like “Independence Arch” and “Lieutenant Friend,” after one of the officers who died in the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine. At least 6 additional routes have been identified for development this year, with the potential for more. With their dedicated team members and several volunteers, including the Dino Trails Committee, DAP has also established access points to the cliff near both entrances to Remember the Maine Park. They are currently working on reinforcing the trail with donated railroad ties; establishing a third, central access point; and connecting them all with a trail along the base of the cliff, to keep climbers away from the road. “The road has been a big concern,” shares DAP Executive Director Amber Toler, “but we’ve been working with Uintah County and USSD1 to create a solution that will keep climbers and drivers safe.” Experienced climbers are welcome to climb the new routes but are asked to stay on the existing trail, climb in the afternoon to stay out of the heat, and wear your helmet. Let freedom ring on July 4th with festivities all day long as part of the Dinosaurland Freedom Fest in Vernal. The Field of Flags is already set up at the Vernal Walking Park and will stay up through July 6th. Tomorrow morning starts off with the Firecracker 5K at 7am. The parade is at 10am and activities kick off at the Vernal City Park on 500 North at noon. Live music starts at 5pm and runs until the fireworks at 10pm. Fire officials ask that all citizens remember to use Fire Sense while celebrating the Independence Day holiday. Fireworks are always illegal on federal lands and officials are encouraging citizens to enjoy public firework shows and not take unnecessary risk with fireworks though there are no additional fire restrictions in place in northeastern Utah.

A case of speeding quickly led to a list of charges last week in Uintah County on Highway 40. A highway patrol trooper attempted to pull over a dark SUV for speeding at 20 over the speed limit when the vehicle slowed down to the speed limit but did not pull over. Instead, the driver continued traveling until he pulled into a driveway. Once stopped, he got out and ran into the house. A BIA officer responded and the vehicle was searched. There were two open containers of alcohol and a records check revealed that the driver, 47-year-old Eli Sireech, had a denied driver’s license and three active warrants. Later that day, he was arrested after an encounter where the vehicle had been towed. Sireech has been charged with Failure to Respond to Command of Police, Interfering with a Peace Officer, Open Container on the Highway, Driving on a Denied License, and Speeding.

A man has been charged for child sexual abuse that allegedly took place in 2023 in Uintah County. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, 19-year-old Damien Marshall made children perform sex acts on him. The investigation was performed by a Vernal PD officer who is also a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce. Forensic interviews were part of the investigation including an interview with Marshall. Since the time of the interview, Marshall has left Utah and gone to Alabama resulting in a warrant for his arrest. Marshall is charged with two counts of 1st Degree Felony Sodomy on a Child and one count of 2nd Degree Felony Sexual Abuse of a Child.

Tentative results in local races for County Commissioner were last updated shortly after midnight. In Duchesne County, for County Commission Seat C, Jeffrey Brent Chugg received 37.48 percent of the vote, Tracy W. Ross received 33.32 percent, Clel Robinson received 14.82 percent, and Bryan Winterton received 14.39 percent. In Uintah County, for County Commissioner, Willis LeFevre received 55.26 percent of the vote while Danny B. Mortensen received 44.74 percent. In Daggett County, incumbent candidate Randall B. Asay received 62.55 percent of the vote while Hank Gutz received 37.45 percent.
