Amid a barrage of wildfires that ignited across Umatilla County near Pilot Rock due to severe lightning storms, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek declared an emergency on Wednesday night. The fires, fanned by gusty winds and parched conditions, have escalated rapidly, posing a grave threat to life and property in the region. In response, the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office is mobilizing the Green Incident Management Team, along with structural task forces from Benton, Marion, and Polk counties to join the firefighting efforts.
Air quality alert affecting Umatilla County Sunday
An air quality alert was issued in effect until Sunday at 3 p.m. for Umatilla County. According to the National Weather Service, "Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Quality Advisory IN EFFECT UNTIL midnight TONIGHT. A Smoke Air Quality Advisory has been issued. Wildfires burning in the region combined with forecasted conditions will cause air quality to reach unhealthy levels. Pollutants in smoke can cause burning eyes runny nose aggravate heart and lung diseases and aggravate other serious health problems. Limit outdoor activities and keep children indoors if it is smoky. Please follow medical advice if you have a heart or lung condition."
