Tania Boonstra and Coby Marvin seek to defend Mount Marathon junior titles
Tania Boonstra’s recipe for success is to climb as fast as possible and then hold off her pursuers on the downhill. It worked for the Kenai runner last year when she built a 2½-minute lead on the next-best climber (her sister Jayna) and then coasted to victory over Rose Conway of Anchorage. That flipped the script from 2022, when Conway won after chasing down Tania and Jayna Boonstra on the downhill.
AROUND ALASKA: Bears Put Down, Wildfire Walk, and Happy Birthday Mara!
Over the past week, three bears had to be put down at the Eklutna Lake Campground. In one instance, state park rangers say two black bears invaded a campsite and were eating the camper's food. Rangers decided the bears had become too habituated and put them down. A few days later, rangers returned to the Eklutna Campground and ultimately put down a third black bear. All of the bears were donated to charity via Fish and Game.
AROUND ALASKA: Ship-Free, Road Damage, and Cruiser Calendar!
Voters in Juneau could get to decide whether Saturdays should be "ship-free." KTOO reports a petition to ban large cruise ships on Saturdays and the Fourth of July now has enough signatures to be on the ballot in October. Supporters of the effort say this would limit the number of cruise ship passengers that visit Juneau each season. The Juneau Assembly has until August 15 to take its own action on the issue.
Researchers Warn of Imminent 'Death Spiral' for Rapidly Melting Alaska Ice Field
The melting of Alaska's Juneau ice field—which contains more than 1,000 glaciers—is accelerating and could reach a tipping point much sooner than predicted, according to research published Tuesday. The study, which was published in the journal Nature Communications, shows that ice loss from the Juneau ice field began accelerating rapidly after 2005. The paper's authors found that "rates of area shrinkage were five times faster from 2015-2019 than from 1979-1990," while glacier volume loss—which had remained relatively consistent from 1770-1979—doubled after 2010. "Forty years from now, what is it going to look like? I do think by then the Juneau ice field will...
