The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has issued two more rabies alerts this year for two counties following the confirmation of rabies in cats. There have been over 20 rabies alerts issued so far in 2024, more than the total number of alerts from all of 2023, each of which highlights the ongoing concern of rabies presence in wild animal populations and the risk of transmission to humans and domestic animals.

In Osceola County, DOH-Osceola has announced a rabies alert after a cat was captured in the Mill Creek Woods area off Orchid Lane on July 8, 2024. Monitoring efforts are in place to track rabies among wild animals in the area. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid physical contact with wild animals such as raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, and coyotes. The alert is effective for 60 days and includes the following boundaries in Osceola County:

    • Northern boundary: 522 E. Osceola Parkway
    • Southern boundary: U.S. Highway 192 - Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway
    • Eastern boundary: Florida’s Turnpike
    • Western boundary: S. John Young Parkway

In Marion County, DOH-Marion has issued a rabies alert following the death of a cat in the Reddick area off Northwest 118 St. Road on July 9, 2024. Similar to Osceola County, efforts are underway to monitor rabies among wild animals. The public is reminded to avoid contact with wild animals, as they pose a higher risk of rabies exposure.

Rabies is a preventable viral disease that can be fatal if left untreated. If exposed to rabies, it is crucial to receive appropriate post-exposure treatment to ensure protection. The DOH urges everyone to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their pets.
