Aerial Surveillance: Drone Used to Uncover Illegal Harvesting in Florida

Officers have successfully utilized drone technology in the fight against illegal harvesting of palmetto berries at the Okaloacoochee Slough Wildlife Management Area, according to the latest report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

In their recent operations, officers deployed a drone to survey the area, which revealed a campsite containing several bags of illegally harvested palmetto berries. This innovative approach allowed for a more efficient investigation, enabling officers to detect illegal activities from above.

The investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify those responsible for the illegal harvesting. Harvesting palmetto berries without proper authorization not only violates wildlife management regulations but also poses a threat to local ecosystems.
