In August, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers recovered more than 10,000 pounds of illegally harvested saw palmetto berries from one of the wildlife management areas, according to a FWC post made today. Thanks to the efforts of FWC, these berries were returned to their natural habitat.

According to the post, reports of trespassing and the illegal theft of saw palmetto berries continue to pose a significant threat to the habitat and food sources of over 200 wildlife species. This unlawful harvesting not only deprives wildlife of vital resources but also hampers the slow-growing plant's ability to propagate.

If you witness trespassers illegally harvesting saw palmetto berries on FWC-managed, state-owned, or private lands, you are encouraged to report it. You can do so by texting 847411 (Tip411) with the keyword “FWC,” calling the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (888-404-3922), or submitting a tip at MyFWC.com/WildlifeAlert.
