As Floridians work to rebuild their homes and communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, a troubling rise in fraud is emerging, with scam artists and dishonest contractors targeting vulnerable storm victims. In response, Florida’s Chief Financial Officer, Jimmy Patronis, has deployed 13 Disaster Fraud Action Strike Teams (DFAST) to combat post-storm fraud in the Big Bend area.

These teams, comprised of 80 law enforcement officers and insurance fraud investigators, are working to educate the public about common fraud schemes and ensure contractors are following state laws, including Florida’s workers' compensation regulations. Already, they have interacted with over 100 consumers in the storm-ravaged region, providing vital information on how to identify and avoid fraudulent repair services.

    Common Post-Storm Fraud Tactics

Fraud during hurricane recovery typically involves contractors or service providers who take advantage of homeowners' desperation to fix damaged properties. Common tactics include:

    • Offering to waive or discount insurance deductibles.
    • Requesting cash payments for repairs, but failing to complete the work.
    • Taking payments without starting or finishing promised services.
    • Stopping communication after receiving payment, leaving homeowners without repairs or recourse.

These deceptive practices not only leave homeowners without the repairs they urgently need but can also result in significant financial losses.

Patronis advises residents to remain cautious and avoid signing any agreements under pressure.

"As you work to recover, don't feel pressured by anyone and DON'T SIGN ANYTHING," he said.

    Resources to Fight Fraud

To further protect residents, Patronis has also deployed Insurance Consumer Services Disaster Assistance Teams, who are working to ensure compliance among contractors, adjusters, and insurance agents. Homeowners can seek help navigating insurance claims through the state's helpline at 1-877-MY-FL-CFO or report suspected fraud to the Insurance Fraud Tip Hotline at 1-800-378-0445.

As hurricane recovery continues, Floridians are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately to prevent further victimization.
