    Busy Labor Day Weekend of College Soccer

    Labor Day weekend was not a restful time for local college teams as there was plenty of action on the pitch. Centenary began their season on Friday afternoon. The ULM Lady Warhawks continued to roll to a 6-0 record. Tech made it two in a row. LCU men played a ranked team to a tie. Check out all the North Louisiana college soccer action over Labor Day weekend.

    Piedmont 1, Centenary 0 (Saturday) (Men)

    Centenary Gents (0-1) started the season at home with a loss against Piedmont at Mississippi University of Women on Friday afternoon. The Lions had to play a man down for the final 5 minutes as Andre Grant received his second yellow which turned into a red. Piedmont outshot the Gents 20-10. Emiliano Mondragon took the most shots with 5. Sebastian Lutin had 6 saves for Centenary.

    After a scoreless first half, Piedmont’s Nathan Jacome scored the lone goal of the match in the 60th minute.

    Mobile 3, LSUA 1 (Saturday)(Women)

    The Lady Generals (1-2-0) fell victim to Mobile's strong first half. Mobile slightly outshot LSUA 13-10. Alexia Bermeja Jo, Micaela Nunes, and Remmie Ferla all shared top shot honors at 2 a piece. Victoria Weber had 3 saves.

    Mobile’s Raegan Latiolas gave the Rams the first goal in the 21st minute with an assist from Andi Hughes. The Rams added another goal when Lindsey Meza scored in the 26th minute. Mobile took one more before halftime as Delainy Cunningham scored. The Rams had a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

    LSUA stopped the shutout as Micaela Nunes scored in the 49th minute.

    #18 Bethel 3, LSUA 2 (Saturday) (Men)

    The General began a road trip to Tennessee first with a match against the 18th-ranked Bethel Wildcats. LSUA overcame a 2-0 deficit to take the ranked team to a tie in just 20 seconds with goals from Adam Sherwood and Javier Moscardo. Bethel snuck one more goal in the second half to escape the Generals. Bethel slightly outshot LSUA 16-12. Sherwood, Moscardo, and Paul Adler all shared top shot honors with 3 each.

    Bethel scored early in the 10th minute with a goal from Horace Avilla Jr. and an assist from Griffin Oyirworth. Oyirworth scored his goal in the 21st minute. Stanley Isaac was credited with the assist. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead to halftime.

    Sherwood messed up the clean sheet in the 53rd minute with an assist from MacKenzie Vincent. Just 20 seconds later, Javier Moscardo tied the match. Tomas Cabrero was given the assist. The ranked team escaped the tie in the 64th minute as Stanley Isaac scored and Oyirworth picked up his second assist of the match. The Wildcats escaped with a 3-2 win

    #16 William Carrey 1, Louisiana College 1 (Saturday)(Men)

    The LCU (2-0-1) Wildcats gave the No.18 ranked William Carey Crusaders a scare but salvaged a tie in Pineville on Saturday. Pedro Sao Tiago scored the lone goal for the Wildcats in the 62nd minute. Juan Sierra was credited with the assist. The Wildcat's defense held on to the lead until the 78th minute when Kolby Godbolt hit the equalizer. The Crusader would hold the tie to the end.

    William Carey outshot the Wildcats 15 to 5. Sao Tiago led shooting with 2. Silva Rodrigo had 4 saves.

    Centenary 4, Huntingdon 1 (Sunday) (Men)

    Centenary (1-1) got their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon against the Hawks. The match was played in Columbus, Mississippi at Mississippi University of Women. Hunter Booth, Kevin Huskey Jr., Emiliano Mondragon, and Christopher Tarr all netted goals for the Gents. Hayden Hughes had two assists for Centenary. Centenary outshot Huntingdon 22-7. Centenary had a lot of opportunities for shots on the goals as they had 14 corners to the Hawks 3. Kevin Huskey Jr. was also the top shot taker with 6.

    Huntingdon took the early lead as Carlos Melendez scored in the 11th minute with an assist from Tate Reynolds. Hunter Booth scored the first goal of the 2024 season for the Gents in the 30th minute. Christopher Tarr was credited with the assist. The two remained tied at 1-1 until halftime.

    Centenary found their groove in the final 20 minutes of the match. Huskey Jr. gave the Gents their first lead in the 69th minute with an assist from Emilano Mondragon. Mondragon had his goal opportunity in the 74th minute with the first assist from Hayden Hughes. Four minutes later Christopher Tarr scored with another assist from Hughes as Centenary locked down the 4-1 win.

    ETBU 3, Centenary 0 (Sunday) (Women)

    The Centenary Ladies (0-1) opened the season on the road in Marshall, TX at East Texas Baptist University. The Tiger outshot Centenary 22-6. Sydney Hamm and Kaitlyn Bordelon were the top shot takers with 2 shots each. Kaniyah Hill grabbed 8 saves.

    ETBU scored in the first 10 minutes in the 7th minute when Grace Shurley netted the first goal. Liliana Garcia was credited with the assist. ETBU held on for the 1-0 halftime lead.

    ETBU’s Sara Ramos scored twice in the 54th minute and the 74th minute. Michele Medlin assisted on both goals.

    Louisiana 2, Grambling 0 (Sunday) (Women)

    The Grambling Lady Tiger (2-3-2) have now dropped two in a row after a 2-0 loss to the Ragin’ Cajuns in Lafayette. UL (4-0-2) has not lost a match despite two ties. Both teams were fairly close in stats🦯UL slightly outshot the Lady Tigers 13-10. Sophia Lezidis lead Grambling in shooting with 4 shots. Madison Covey-Taylor grabbed 4 saves.

    Lucy Ortiz for the Cajuns scored the first goal in the 19th minute with some help from Tatum Beck. Sophie Placke netted the second goal about four minutes before halftime to give the Cajuns the 2-0 halftime lead.

    The score would remain the same for the second half as Louisiana took the “W”.

    The Bulldogs (2-1-3) made it two in a row as they grabbed a home win on the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Match with Arkansas State Red Wolves. Tech outshot Arkansas State 17-8. Fifth-year senior Kalli Matlock was the top shot taker with 4. Cadence Rutledge garnered 3 saves.

    After a scoreless first half, Louisiana Tech’s Dakota Merino scored in the 52nd minute which turned into the winning goal for the Bulldogs.

    ULM (6-0-0) remained undefeated as they took 1-0

    Thomas University (Ga) 3, LSUA 2 (Monday)(Women)

    What better way to end a Labor Day weekend than with a college soccer match? Unfortunately, the Lady Generals came up short 3-2 against the Night Hawks. LSUA (1-3-0) made a late second-half comeback but the 3-0 deficit was too much to overcome. LSUA got goals from Sacha Backus and Micaela Nunes. Nunes also picked up an assist. Thomas U slightly outshot LSUA 15-13 in Mobile, Alabama. Justice Richardson took 4 shots for LSUA. Meike van Straten had 4 saves.

    Kaitlyn Herb gave Thomas U the first goal in the 30th minute with an assist from Ali Baca. The Night Hawks held on to the 1-0 lead to halftime.

    Thomas U pushed on the gas in the second half and didn't let go. Herb took her second goal of the match in the 53rd minute. The lead was pushed to 3-0 when Hannah Henriksen netted her goal in the 63rd minute. Jule Rohleder was credited with the assist. LSUA scored four minutes later when Backus popped the back of the net with help from Nunes. Nunes got her scoring opportunity in the 73rd minute to close in 3-2. The Lady Generals couldn’t get any closer as the Night Hawls held on for the win.

    Freed-Hardeman 5, LSUA 2

    The Tennesse road trip ended on Labor Day as Freed Hardeman Lions won 5-2. LSUA (2-3-0) had the early lead only to concede four consecutive goals to give up the road loss Mnqobi Mbili and Javier Moscardo gave the Generals the two goals. The Lions outshot LSUA 19-13. Five Generals had two shots each in the match. Mattia Loiolli had 5 saves

    LSUA had the early goal in the 9th minute as Mbili deflected in the shot. Nikola Babic was given the assist. FHU tied the match at 1-1 in the 16th minute as Sebata Ts’emane scored with an assist from Thabang Machaka. The Lions took the lead at 2-1 in the 25th minute. FHU put one more in before the half ended with a goal from Noah Setterberg. Ts’emane was given the assist. The Lions had a strong 3-1 halftime lead.

    FHU’s Thabo Mahlala pushed the lead to 4-1. Setterbeg was given the assist. Moscardo gave the Generals a second goal of the match with help from Mackenzie Vincent. The celebration was less than two minutes as the Lion popped their 5th goal with Mahlala’s second goal of the match.
