The Underwood Eagles are heading back to the state tournament after defeating Clarinda 3-0 last Tuesday.

The Eagles took the lead early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Eagles added one more in the bottom of the third to lead 3-0 and win the game. Clarinda was held to zero runs for just the third time all season. The Hawkeye 10 champions were held to zero runs on four hits.

Sophomore Garrett Luett threw all seven innings in the shutout and tallied 14 strikeouts on the season. Offensively senior Gus Bashore led the way for Underwood with a pair of base hits and two RBIs. The Eagles ended the game with three runs on five hits.

Underwood will be looking to get back to where they were a year ago, after losing 7-1 to Beckman Catholic in the 2A state championship. The Eagles will get ready to take on Unity Christian (25-11) who upset Estherville Lincoln Central 3-2.

The Knights come into their first state tournament game with a young squad, as only two seniors regularly start for the squad. It will be a tough game for Unity Christian as they only bat .263 as a team and will face an Underwood team that gives up 1.9 runs per game and holds a team ERA of 1.44.

Underwood will take on Unity Christian on Tuesday, July 23, at 11:00 a.m. in Merchant’s Park in Carroll.
