At the Ag PhD Field Day in Baltic, South Dakota, Preston said his geography covers a variety of conditions. “It’s very diverse agriculture with sugarbeets, dry edible beans, potatoes and more so our people have to know recommendations because of carryover and things like that in chemistry,” said Preston. “Down here it’s predominantly corn and beans.” Preston, who is based in Hillsboro, North Dakota, said soil types also vary greatly across the region.”The (Red River) Valley is very unique and we work all the way out to the Montana border. We go from irrigation to heavy clay/high magnesium soils to bull sand. So it’s very diverse and it takes different agronomy skills and expertise to work with farmers.”

DOE Backs No Phone Policy As More Schools Join
(Pierre, SD) — More South Dakota schools are getting onboard with the Gettysburg School District’s new no phone policy. And the Department of Education is supporting the idea. The Edgemont School District in southwestern South Dakota will be implementing the same lockable cloth pouches as Gettysburg in the fall. In a statement this week, the Department of Education wrote it wishes the schools “success in their efforts to minimize the issues caused by cell phones in the classroom.” Edgemont’s superintendent, Amy Ferley, said the district is moving forward with the policy because policing phone use became too much and was taking away from student lessons.

The Madison Post 25 baseball team lost to Dell Rapids 6-1, in the semi’s of the Region 2B American Legion baseball tournament on Thursday. Dell Rapids took control early, scoring two runs in the 1st inning off a Madison error and a single from CJ Smith. Dell’s then scored a run in four consecutive innings starting in the 3rd. Madison’s lone run came on an error in the 6th.
