Troy Loftin is a 6-foot-2 senior guard for South Central’s boys’ basketball team who averaged 11.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2 assists and 1.5 steals per game heading into the 3A state playoffs.

Loftin helped the Falcons win the Big Carolina 3A/4A Conference regular-season title and tournament title. Loftin scored in double figures in 14 of South Central’s regular-season games, highlighted by a 27-point outing against Washington on Dec. 6 and a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds against Jacksonville on Jan. 19.

Loftin spoke with correspondent Gabe Cornwall after a recent game.

Q: Where did you get your love for basketball?

A: When I was younger, I just started testing out sports, and basketball just stuck with me. I’ve always enjoyed it, enjoyed watching it and enjoyed being around it. Ever since, I’ve been in love with the game.

Q: Do you model your game after anyone?

A: No sir. I just try to be the best version of myself.

Q: What are working on most right now?

A: Working on shooting, being more consistent and getting myself in the best shape possible so I can play as long as I need to.

Q: You’re about a lot more than just scoring points. How much pride do you take in filling the stat sheet with rebounds and assists?

A: I take a lot of pride in it, and do as much as I can to help my team win so we can be the best version of ourselves.

Q: What’s the adjustment from coach (Leland) Jones from Coach (Chris) Cherry?

A: It’s been easy because ever since I got to South Central, Coach Jones has always been around me. Always trying to coach me up, so it has been pretty easy. He has always been around us so it wasn’t that hard.

Q: Are looking to play at the next level?

    A: Yes sir.

Q: Who is talking to you or looking at you?

A: I think there’s a few JUCO schools looking at me. I’m not sure about any other schools.

Q: What your personal goals and team goals for the rest of the season? (South Central lost on Tuesday night in the third round of the state playoffs)

A: Goal is to be conference tournament champions as well as conference champions. Trying to lead the team so we can go as far as we can in the playoffs. Bring home another state championship.
