UNION, NJ - Stache Barbershop partnered with Union's Community Policing Bureau to offer free haircuts/fades, eyebrow waxing and manicures for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade Union students on June 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to kick off the summer.
Many children happily climb into the salon chairs to receive their free services that allowed them to relax after a busy school year and look fresh for the summer. The volunteers were happy to make sure the kids looked their best. The volunteers include four barbers from Stache Barbershop and one person from the Union Police Department who is a licensed barber.
The owner of Stache Barbershop for eleven years, Michael Checo, has always loved to give back to the community; growing up in Union has allowed him to be active in the Union Township Boys and Girls Club. Also, he has a non-profit called The Stache Foundation which gives children in underdeveloped communities free haircuts.
“When the police department saw the outreach that I do they wanted to team up at the end of the year," said Checo. "After putting our heads together, we decided to do free haircuts and extend the program for girls by doing nails and eyebrow waxing."
Spearheading the event with Checo was Officer Michael Beaty, a proud member of the Union Police Department. Like Stache Barbershop, Beaty and the rest of the police officers wanted to give back to the community in some way.
“Given that the summer is approaching, we want to do more events and get more involved in the community," said Beaty. "We figured a free haircutting, eyebrow waxing and nails event would be a perfect way to start off the summer for the kids. We want the children to know we are here for them."
This is the first time the Community Policing Bureau and Stache Barbershop teamed up for an event like this, but both parties involved hope to turn this into an annual event as well as do a similar event for going back to school.
